Housing is an essential component to the success of the Fruitvale Village development. This project has helped alleviate the shortage of housing in Fruitvale by adding 47 1 & 2 bedroom rental lofts and apartments. Of the 47 units, 10 are designated as affordable units for residents earning between 35 - 80% of the Area Median Income.
Many hard-working families and individuals in Oakland cannot afford to rent a high quality home or must pay a substantial proportion of their income each month for housing. The Transit Village contains apartments for families, conveniently located near community services and transit. Expert management and ongoing maintenance are high priorities. The Fruitvale Development Corporation's parent organization, the Unity Council, has extensive experience in the development and management of high quality housing in the Fruitvale neighborhood. An additional benefit of the housing is that it ensures the presence of residents outside of normal business hours. These residents patronize the shops, restaurants, and entertainment in the area and enhance the safety of the neighborhood with their full-time presence.
