Head Teacher III

Reports To Site Director
Department Head Start & Early Head Start
Hours 8AM – 5PM
Travel Some travel to various work and vendor sites
Salary Range DOE
Employee Status Regular, Full-time
Supervises None
Benefits Medical, Dental, and Vacation on the first of the month following 90 days of employment. Vacation accrual at a rate of two weeks per year for the first five years.

Program Summary
The Unity Council is a non-profit community development corporation committed to enriching the quality of life of families primarily in the Fruitvale District of Oakland. Its primary focus has been to create a healthier and safer community for families and residents by implementing and managing integrated programs addressing the economic, social, and physical development.

Responsibilities The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
•  Teach, which includes curriculum development;
•  Ability to model play-based, child-centered curriculum;
•  Coordinate and supervise the assessment of children;
•  Supervise teaching staff in assigned classroom;
•  Verify hours for teaching staff in the classroom on semi-monthly timesheets;
•  Maintaining open communication with parents;
•  Day-to-day operations of the classroom;
•  Contract compliance and reporting;
•  Attendance at regular staff meetings;
•  Other assignments as requested by Site Director or Management.
 

Qualifications Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
•  AA Degree in Early Childhood Education or in a related field from a regionally accredited institution & a Site Supervisor Permit;
•  Minimum of 3 years teaching experience and a minimum of 2 years experience working with preschool children;
•  One year administrative and supervision experience, preferably at a child care center;
•  Familiarity with administrative procedures (prior Head Start experience preferred);
•  Ability to work harmoniously in a multicultural team;
•  Promote feeling of security and trust in infants and toddlers by being warm, supportive, and comforting;
•  Caring, compassionate approach to working with children and families as well as maintaining an open, friendly and cooperative relationship with each child's family;
•  Bilingual Spanish/English or Asian Language/English preferred;
•  Awareness of safe lifting techniques for lifting children, supplies and furnishings and commitment to using preventive health measures in the classroom to prevent the spread of disease.
