EARLY HEAD START PROGRAM: TEACHER II
Program Overview: The Unity Council has three Early Head Start centers located at 1117 10th Street (Thurgood Marshall), 1155 35th Ave (De Colores), and 10700 MacArthur Blvd. (Foothill Square) in Oakland. The Early Head Start centers offer a play-based, Piagetian, multicultural, bilingual program focusing on developmentally-appropriate practice and individualized education. Both Thurgood Marshall & De Colores are licensed for 40 children, Foothill Square licensed for 108 children. Early Head Start serves children between the ages of 0 to 3 and a minimum of 24 pregnant mothers are included in the program. The Early Head Start program runs year round.
The Position: The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Teaching which includes, curriculum development and daily lesson planning;
- Communicating with parent;
- Implementation of daily activities such as child-centered learning, planning indoor/outdoor activities, language extension;
- Ongoing assessment of children in assigned group;
- Participating in parent activities;
- Attendance at regular staff meetings;
- Supervision of an Aide (Assistant/Associate Teacher);
- Perform additional duties as assigned by supervising teacher, Site Director and Management.
Knowledge, Skills and Ability:
- AA Degree preferred in Early Childhood Education or related field, or a minimum of 24 ECE units from a regionally accredited institution and must be willing to earn 3 units per semester towards AA degree & Children’s Center Permit;
- 2-3 years experience working with infants/toddlers;
- Ability to create and implement daily curriculum plans;
- Ability to work well harmoniously in a multi-cultural team;
- Ability to promote feeling of security and trust in infants and toddlers by being warm, supportive, and comforting;
- Caring, compassionate approach to working with children and families as well as maintaining an open, friendly and cooperative relationship with each child’s family;
- Bilingual Spanish/English or Asian Language/English preferred;
- Awareness of safe lifting techniques for lifting children, supplies and furnishings and commitment to using preventive health measures in the classroom to prevent the spread of disease.
