The Family Literacy Program promotes literacy development and achievement of parents and their children as they learn together through the coordination and delivery of adult education, parenting education, early childhood education and literacy activities. Literacy is more than acquiring the skills to read and write -- it is a means to accessing power. It empowers families to advocate for changes in the government, education and for the betterment of their communities. We recognize parents as the primary educators of their children, and while our main goal is to prepare children to be ready to enter school, we also prepare our families to learn how to support and advocate for their children's education. This approach will have a long-term effect on ensuring that Latino students stay in school, excel and go on to college.
