The Fruitvale Public Market is a small business incubator that provides attractive, affordable storefront space and professional business technical assistance services to micro-enterprises. The project was started to:
- Expand access to business opportunities for entrepreneurs and small businesses
- Promote job creation and micro-enterprise development
- Expand business opportunities in the Fruitvale and San Antonio neighborhoods
Opened in 2008, the Fruitvale Public Market’s 7,000 square foot indoor-outdoor market currently supports eleven small businesses that add a colorful array of goods and services to the local Fruitvale community. The Public Market showcases Latin American flavors and colors, with representative arts and crafts and ethnic foods. The market has a full-time professional manager who monitors the vendors to ensure that a high standard of quality, freshness, authenticity, and variety are consistently available at the market. In addition to retail space, entrepreneurs have access to business planning, management and marketing resources to sustain and promote business growth.
The Fruitvale Public Market and the adjacent Plaza De La Fuente serve as a link between the Fruitvale Village and the International Boulevard commercial corridor. Though primarily a shopping destination, the Fruitvale Public Market also provides a venue for community activities such as fairs, performances on the plaza, arts and crafts demonstrations, education about healthy food, and a year-round Farmers’ Market on Sundays and Thursday evenings. |
