What is The Unity Council Fruitvale Public Market?

The Fruitvale Public Market Incubator (FPMI) project was started to:
•  Create business opportunities for entrepreneurs and small businesses
•  Promote job creation and micro-enterprise development and
•  Expand business opportunities in the Fruitvale and San Antonio neighborhoods

The Unity Council has selected 12 vendors, (10 startup business and 2 existing small/micro-businesses), to occupy retail 17 retail spaces throughout the 7,000 square foot indoor outdoor market. As a business incubator, the market will provide a variety of individualized business services business technical assistance and marketing support to promote business growth.

The Fruitvale Public Market will serve as a physical link between the Fruitvale Village and the International Boulevard commercial corridor. The Fruitvale Public Market will also transform the nearby Plaza de la Fuente into a lively public space with outdoor vendors and activities year-round.

Development of the Market
The design of the market began in 2005. Construction of the market began March 2006 and was completed in February 2007. Vendor outreach began in October 2005, and over 200 applicants were screened. Operation of the market began this past April. Several of the businesses are still in the process of acquiring health and building permits, or are currently completing construction.
