The Unity Council operates several programs that work with local youth. Based on the evolving needs of our community, our youth programs change over time and address diverse needs.
Currently, The Unity Council operates 3 Youth Programs:
- Youth Employment Program: As part of our suite of Workforce Development programs, we work with youth that face barriers to employment and provide them with training, resources, and internships so that they can finish school and begin a great career. Youth receive a stipend or payment while enrolled in the program. Enrollment and eligibility requirements vary throughout the year, so check our Youth Employment page or contact the Program Manager Melecia Navarro for more information.
- AmeriCorps: In partnership with the National Council de la Raza, each year we host a group of AmeriCorps members to gain hands-on work experience and give back to the Fruitvale community through direct service projects. AmeriCorps members receive a monthly stipend and an education award at the end of their service. Interested youth aged 17+ must apply during our enrollment period. Check our AmeriCorps page or contact the Program Manager Laura Espino for more information.
- Latino Men & Boys: A school-based mentorship program now working at 5 Oakland public schools, LMB follows the culturally appropriate curriculum of Joven Noble aimed to keep young Latino men and boys successful in school, prepared for a job, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Enrollment and eligibility depend on school group. Check our Latino Men & Boys page or contact the Program Manager Paul Flores for more information.
Children, teens, young adults, and people of any age are encouraged to become volunteers at The Unity Council! Volunteers make a lasting impact through service projects, office administration, and can help put on awesome events like our annual Dia de los Muertos. Sign up to volunteer online, or email firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions.
